Shawn Okpebholo: smooth | pluck | whirl

smooth | pluck | whirl is a study in contrast and continuity for unaccompanied violin, unfolding across three distinct yet interdependent sections. The piece begins with smooth, drawing the listener into a world of lyricism and fluid motion, subtly anchored by an underlying groove that transitions into sweeping scalar passages. The energy then shifts to pluck, a dynamic middle section characterized by percussive pizzicato and intricate rhythmic playfulness. Finally, whirl drives the piece toward its climax—a relentless, cyclic staccato passage, quasi perpetuum mobile, gaining in intensity. Balancing textural contrasts with organic continuity, this work offers both performer and listener an evolving kinetic energy, shaping a journey that is as expressive as it is animated.
